How To Be In Your Body, Interview for "This Podcast Is A Ritual"

So a wizard walks into a workshop… for real though. I recently held a workshop at Movement Research in New York City and a certain 21st century wizard, Devin Person, was in attendance and then asked me to be on his podcast. Appropriately named “This Podcast Is A Ritual,” I chose the theme: “align.” In this interview we talk about my journey with debilitating chronic pain and how that led me to Alexander Technique, the chair as a microcosm for addressing habits, and why capitalism encourages the disconnection of body + mind. It was truly a blast of a conversation with lots of insightful nuggets. Though I can’t confidently tell you exactly what it means to be a wizard, I can speak to the fact that there are many modern witches investing in the power of intention as magic. Intention and attention are our tools for transformation.

I teach my students how to have conscious choice. My job is to provide the space for them to learn and grow and be comfortable with being wrong, that is the way that you learn how to improve. There’s no room for growth if you are constantly doing the same thing over and over again.

I’m not teaching people something new. This is something that you have already, a natural coordination and we are learning what it is that you are over-doing that is stopping you from tapping into that.

I cannot address someone in their habits if they’re thinking, ‘I need to do this right, I need to be perfect,’
or if they’re trying to control in a way. It’s the journey not the destination.

Most of the ways that people are causing harm is when they’re trying to do things correctly or get to the end goal. So they’re not like breathing and feeling in the moment and not being present.
